I was given the opportunity to read "Cast of Characters" by Max Lucado and what really stands out the most about the book, is the fact that it is a reminder to us all that we serve a loving Father, who loves us, not based on who we are in society, the amount of money we have in the bank, or how society wants to define us, but by how willing and open we are to be His servants and to answer His calling. The men and women, in "Cast of Characters" are everyday people, both the might be likely and the [...]
This very insightful look at several people from the Bible and the open discussion of their lives, both strengths and weaknesses, will help the reader gain some varied ways of looking at how God responds to their own strengths and weaknesses.
Max Lucado has a way of explaining the bible and making it personal. He writes so simply yet you find the deepest meanings in the things he writes. Simple situations are turned into examples of God's grace or love. This book takes writings of Max's on individuals in the bible and explores who they were and what they did. I like the idea because there are a lot of people in the bible we can all identify with and they have all done the human things we have done. So many times we may think we are a [...]
I have read a number of Max Lucado's works. Most of them I have found to be wonderful and profound. However this book felt wrong. I picked it up to read today. I was disappointed and a little upset at the way Lucado portrayed the Bible and Biblical characters. I felt he was trying to fit in with today's hip way of life. I have respect and reverence for my Father in Heaven and the Holy Scriptures. I felt that the respect and reverence that the Bible demands was not there. It was almost callous in [...]
This was actually a very easy read once I was able to find the time to read it. Great insights to the classic stories of the Bible. Max is truly amazing to represents the characters in the Bible as of they were people today.
I thought done pretty good job helping to get a better understanding of the different characters throughout the Bible and, what they might have thought about during those times.
Cast of CharactersCommon People in the Hands of an Uncommon GodBy Max LucadoThis book is the most spiritually uplifting book I have read. The way that max has written these chapters from the bible make them so relate able. It starts off at a coffee house where you are sitting arcoss from a man and you can't help but stare at him and wonder what race he is etc. The man notices and says I am hebrew and he starts telling you the short version of how he came to be here in egypt. He talks about how h [...]
There’s a strange phenomenon that sometimes occurs when we read a book, watch a movie, or have an experience in the course of our daily lives. This phenomenon is often referred to as déjà vu. Déjà vu is the sense that you’ve been here, seen this, or had this experience before. It may be hard to put your finger on it, but there is a sense of the familiar. As I stated earlier, there are times we all encounter this when reading a book, especially in the pages of our Bibles. As the stories o [...]
Cast of Characters is a wonderful little book that lets the reader see into the lives of some of the people who participated in the stories of the Bible. These characters weren’t spotless, they weren’t without fault, but they were the people who God chose to use for His perfect work; people like David, Jarius, Abigail, Nicodemus, The Samaritan Woman, Job, Esther, and so on. I could tell that this book was written to inspire Christians to realize how magnificent our God is. It took a few chap [...]
While I do not endorse all of his theological positions, Max Lucado has a genuine talent for articulating gospel truths in plain language. All of his books are written with a conversational tone, light mood, and easy style. They make for quick-reads that are both encouraging and inspiring. The Cast of Characters is actually a compilation of several excerpts from different books written by Lucado. Each chapter is a character study of a different person in the Bible, usually focusing on a specific [...]
At first, I struggled to get into this book. Those first few chapters were a bit bland to me for some reason. However, after that, I fully fell in love with this book.Cast of Characters is a book filled with short stories and insights into the lives of over 22 biblical heroes and heroines. Each chapter just gets better and better as you go.I read in the below comments that some didn't enjoy this book as much because some of the stories were just excerpts from Max Lucado's other books. However, h [...]
Max Lucado is a prolific writer who has the wonderful ability to remind his readers that stories from the Bible aren't old, out-of-date, stuffy, or irrelevant. The people written about in the Bible were people just like you and me: ordinary, flesh and blood, flawed, messed-up people; (that is, all except Jesus, who was God incarnate.) Max examines the lives of about 20 people from the Bible and shows how they are just like us today. He paints great word pictures and I could easily see each story [...]
Who, or what, is the Goliath in your life?Is Jesus encouraging you to "stand up" where you could never stand before? How do you react to mistreatment and unfairness?Max Lucado uses David, the crippled man, Joseph and nineteen others to encourage you in this compilation of inspiring and thought-provoking articles. They each have a message (or three) for you and for me.In his usual inimitable style, Lucado brings his cast of characters to modern-day life. These people lived thousands of years ago, [...]
I have always enjoyed the writings of Max Lucado and his new book, Cast of Characters: Common People in the Hands of and Uncommon God doesn't disappoint! Thought provoking and well written, in this book, Max Lucado introduces the reader to many of our favorite biblical characters, pointing out how each person was a very ordinary person, just like you and I. Faced with trials, challenges, pressure and frustration, this book demonstrates how God was able to use each person for His divine purposes [...]
This is the first book I have ever read by Max Lucado, and I must say, the best non- fiction book I've read in a very long time! Most devotional/inspirational books-that I've read- are dull and lifeless. Not so with this book! Lucado takes a "cast of characters" from the Bible and places them in real life situations, allowing you to relate easier to them. For instances, take Moses. The scene pans to a murderer, reduced from the life of a big-shot, to a janitor. Ever heard the story of Moses like [...]
If you have ever read anything by Max Lucado, you will already know the man can write. He puts those hard to understand Biblical Principles into easy bite able pieces. One of my favorites by him is No Wonder They Call Him Savior, which gives a whole new look into our Savior, Jesus Christ. In Cast of Characters, he shows just how Human the heroes of the Bible really were. Those familiar with his books will recognize stories like Peter, who even after denying Christ was told at the tomb he had been [...]
Cast of Characters: Common People in the Hands of an Uncommon God definitely tops my favorites list when it comes to books written by Max Lucado. There is just something about his writing style that I love. Each chapter is the story of a different person from the bible. The way Lucado tells each story is uncommon, suitably so since these are stories about “common people and an Uncommon God.” He tells their stories as if they are happening today. I think this aspect helps the unbeliever to un [...]
Cast of Characters by Max Lucado is a really interesting book! This book is about "Common people in the hands of an uncommon God," which is so true! My favorite character in the bible would have to be David and Lucado talks about him! Which was really exciting. Most people think that everyone in the Bible are perfect, but it's not true. They were perfectly imperfect! God made them and created them--for a purpose.Religion is so much more than beliefs, it's also a relationship and I feel that Luca [...]
We read this book in my growth group at church this spring. This is the first Max Lucado book I've read, but now I understand the hype because the man is really fantastic. He's not just a good minister (i.e. full of sound insight), but he's actually a talented writer as well, full of rich descriptions and apt metaphors without cluttering the language.Cast of Characters is a collection of devotionals on various men and women in the Bible, some quite well-known and others obscure. Lucado's observat [...]
Man is flawed. God is not. God will use all of us flawed human beings if we choose to be obedient. Max writes a series of chapters of various characters throughout the Bible, trying to help us see them in a different lightybe more the way we would see these people today. It is extremely difficult to not use our hindsight and color the people of the Bible with the indicators of what we know they will accomplish. By retelling some of the stories, you can take that spin away slightly and recognize [...]
Cast of Characters is a compilation of several of Max Lucado’s books, chronicling the lives of people in the Bible. Each chapter describes a different character, relating their story to our own. The pages are a celebration of what an awesome God can do with the lives of common people. This was my first time reading a book by Max Lucado and I enjoyed it immensely. His writing style is casual, interesting, and easy to follow. I used it as a devotional to help me get back into reading my Bible mo [...]
For me to give a Max Lucado book only two stars is unusual. I think it is because of the fine print on the top of the cover just above his name. It says From the writings of And quite frankly, much of it reads like writings of. By that I mean that the entire book is chapters extracted from fourteen of his other books. At points one feels as if there is a bigger theme being developed that you're just not getting. And there is, in that book. This volume seeks to show how God used everyday people w [...]
I have been a fan of Max Lucado for a long time and was excited when the opportunity to review one of his works arose. "Cast of Characters" is a wonderful collection of some previously published writings coupled with some new ones. The collection of stories illustrates how God uses ordinary people to do extraordinary things. The story of the woman who washed Jesus' feet with her hair is a personal favorite. Everyone looked at this woman in disgust yet it was Jesus who reminded them her act was on [...]
In "Cast of Characters", Max Lucado provides a unique spin on many major characters in both the Old and New Testament of the Bible. Story after story is marked by scandal, dishonor, disgrace, and intrigue. Nevertheless, in the midst of the mess, looking into the heart is God passing out sacred callings, second chances, changing hearts, minds, and souls. Lucado brings you into the heart of Philippians 4:13 "I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me" (NKJV).On the surface "Cast of Char [...]
The Adult Sunday School Bible Study class used this book this year. It was wonderful for a Bible study. Each chapter was a separate entity so when people had to miss a Sunday, they didn't get behind. The study guide was very well written. Lucado has a wonderful way of bringing Bible stories into the 21st century and he did a wonderful job here. The story of Nicodemus was the best. Also very good were chapters on: Matthew, a Saturday night person moving in with Sunday morning people; the two crim [...]
I say it all the time, but one of the things I love about Max Lucado books is that he makes things approachable and easily understood. He adds a lot of personal stories that really help illustrate his points. This book takes that a step further in that he offers a modern take on Bible stories. Jairus becomes a busy modern preacher who tries to maintain a perfect image until his daughter's health forces him to go see an upstart troublemaker to get help. It didn't bother me, but some people may not [...]
SO GOOD!this may have been one of my favorite books of all time. it was awesome. it really takes all these characters from the bible and shows the relevance of their story to todays time. like david: it must've really taken some guts to stand up to a giant with just a slingshot. i mean, these days we tend to shrug off bible stories like they are fairy tales but they weren't. they were real people. just like you and me. and they had strengths and weaknesses like we do. this book really makes God' [...]
Definitely a Max Attack! & Hilarious at times, too!!! Max Lucado at his best! "Cast of Characters: Common People in the Hands of an Uncommon God" takes you on a Bible ride you would have never expected. I highly recommend this for allcially for those you have strayed away from the Bible because it may be too hard for them to comprehend. Max takes some of the stories from the Bible & turns them into our every day lives, every day situations, for use "Common People". Read some of the excer [...]
This is a book I needed to savor. I spent two years slowly reading and digesting each character. This morning during a summer rainstorm I finished the reading with the last four characters following the same line of thought. I had never really truly thought about the line "Blessed are the poor in spirit". We must know that we are not in control of lives but God totally has our future in control. It is a good thing to hope, quietly hope for help from God. His faithfulness is beyond measure.
With Max Lucado you can never go wrong.Looking for answers, looking to renew, looking to fill yourself - go to Mr. Lucado. In Cast of Characters he breaks down some unlikely heroes and saints of the Bible. How can a prosector turn his will over and become the stone of which the Church is built? How can a prositute recieve forgivenes and Grace from God? Now, how about you?In modern takes, Mr. Lucado brings us on a journey not just of this Cast of Characters, but upon the journey of our own charact [...]
